1. Trends are an easy way to date your decor or your closet.
Choose an aesthetic you can commit to, then swap in elements that allow for the space to evolve as your taste does.
2. Practice the rule of odd.
When placing decorative items, use groupings of three. It creates a visual balance. A tall vase of flowers, a smaller sculpture or object of a contrasting or complimentary tone, and a short decorative box or plant can really elevate a large vanity, tabletop or shelf.
3. Decorative items can work overtime if they also serve a purpose.
Items should be placed where they will be used. An attractive woven basket to hold bath oils will live in a functional location near the tub.
4. When decorating any space, add character and color with items that can be reworked..
It may start with a great textured rug or a piece of eclectic art. Then look at the smaller elements in the profile of furniture, use items that complement those design elements to bring it full circle.
5. Embrace biophilia.
There is always room for a plant. Indoor rooms can get to bogged down with all the stuff we accumulate keeping a live plant promotes self -reflection and mindfulness, as they not only make our spaces warm and inviting but actually purify our air.
6. Keep it simple or go bold.
Patterns are everywhere. Go with either one big, bold pattern or a few smaller elements. Too many patterns when not balanced are too much of a good thing. Slowly add until it’s just right.
7. Don’t sleep on antique sales, thrift shops, or flea markets.
These places are filled with discoveries you’ll never find at a mass-produced store. You can’t expect to outfit your entire house in one trip, but for me, it’s the random search and discovery that makes my home an ever-evolving place I keep going back to.
8. Your living space should serve your needs and reflect your style and family
Whatever that looks like. With children and pets your house can feel like a maze of storage solutions. Stowing everyone’s toys while still creating a space that encourages rest and relaxation is a tall but necessary order.
